St Augustine’s Annual Senior Team Meeting - 4 May 2017
The veterans section entered three teams of three players again this year where as a club we were defending the St Augustine’s Shield which was won last year by David Eldridge, Hans Pfeffer and Roy Burt.
The same players made up this years A, Team supported by Dick Rump, Albert Edwards and Alan Wood (the B Team) and finally David Harbron, John Linstead and David James made up (the C Team). Each team was supported by a senior from St Augustine’s with the best 3 scores on each hole to count.
On what was a dry start to the day turned into a very windy affair especially on the back nine holes the game started to unfold with teams having entered from across the whole of Kent.
In the end, Ashford faired very well again with the B Team just edging out the A Team by 126points to 123 points thanks it would seem to a red-hot putter owned and operated by Dick Rump the B Team Captain who in his speech said that he was very pleased to have beaten the A Team, a comment that raised more than a chuckle or two!
This meant that Ashford GC retained the Shield and our A Team won the Volvo Challenge Trophy for coming second. It was nearly a clean sweep of 1st,2nd and 3rd with Ashford C Team just being pipped at the post, finishing in a creditable 4th place.
There were also individual prizes for best scores in the various handicap categories. This was again a hard fought battle in the 13 – 16 handicap group between two Ashford players namely Dick Rump and Hans Pfeffer with Hans gaining some degree of revenge by edging Dick on count back with scores of 42 points each. For his efforts Hans won the Ron Bowers Rose Bowl.
This completed the hat trick in Category 2 handicaps as David Eldridge won this in 2015 and Roy Burt in 2016, so in total 3 trophies will need to find space in the club’s trophy cabinet for the next year.
